It's only 10 days now until we depart on a 14 month journey around the world, and the enormity of what we are soon to embark on still doesn't really register with me. Perhaps I'm just blissfully ignorant of the many challenges ahead, but I'm hopeful that we're pretty well organised for whatever the world may throw at us. In any case we're slowly running out of time to get things organised, but thankfully most of the major items have already been taken care of, and there are only a few small last-minute annoying items left to check off.

Flights are booked, hotels and tours are also booked, insurance has been purchased, vaccinations are pretty much taken care of, and it's now just bags to pack (and weigh!) I hope.

So how are we feeling about the year ahead you may ask? Excited? Absolutely. Nervous? Maybe a little. Any fear? Trepidation? Not at the moment, but check back next Wednesday and you may get a different answer. The unknown undoubtedly provides elements of all of these, but hopefully after a few days in Cancun, and meeting our first tour group, I'm sure most of the nerves will subside, and the excitement of the 14 months ahead will begin to take over.

So what is this trip about? And what do we hope to be able to convey to you via our blog? For me, it's a chance to go to some of the many places around the world that I've always wanted to go, to see things I've never seen, and do things I've never done before. We're both at an age (31) where if we don't do this now, we're never going to be able to do it, and it's something that I feel is important for me as a person before thinking about settling down. So for me that's what the trip is about.

What do we hope to be able to convey via this blog? We want to be able to tell you more than just what we've done, and where we've been - that's not really all that interesting in itself. Hopefully we're going to be able to give you an insight to how our travels and our experiences affect us - the things we enjoy, the things we miss, the surprising encounters, the life-changing experiences, the trials and tribulations of living out of a backpack, and living with and travelling around the world with another person, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for 14 or more months. I'm sure that the highs and lows will be numerous.

Here's hoping to a safe and fun trip that we will both remember for the rest of our lives.

We both hope that you will check back regularly, and enjoy the experience of travelling around the world with us over the next year or so.
