Then we drove on to Segovia which is about an hour's drive north of Madrid. The first highlight is a Roman aquaduct that is perfectly preserved. It is huge with 62 arches and is a focal point of the old town of Segovia. Then we walked up to Plaza Mayor, a quaint little plaza, for lunch.
The next highlight was the Alcazar of Segovia, a castle/ fortress. It is just like a fairytale castle, and was in fact used in Disneyland. In the Middle Ages, it was one of the favourite residences of the monarchs of Castile and it was from this castle that Isabella the Catholic left to be proclaimed Queen on 13th December, 1474. It was fascinating to look around, and it had fantastic turrets and towers.
Back to Madrid, and a quick visit to the Prado Museum before it closed. We had time to see the masters - Rubens, El Greco, Rembrandt and many others.
A great day
