Pompeii is an amazing site. We were immediately struck by the size of it compared to Herculanneum as well as its grandeur. We wandered in and out of houses, up to the courts/ administrative area, the forum, canneries, temples, House of the Faun, take away shops, baths, sports training centre, amphitheatre and more. It was such a vast area to cover and it took us all day. Unlike Herculanneum which was covered in lava, Pompeii was covered in ash and rubble when Vesuvius erupted in 79AD. So a lot of it is quite well preserved and it is easy to see the layout of the city with Mount Vesuvius looming in the background. A great day!
