Had a breathtaking start to the morning with breakfast on the rooftop of our hotel looking at the Acropolis with the sun rising in the background.
Our first stop was the Athens Archaeological Museum to see the spectacular display of Mycenaean artefacts from the 16th Century BC onwards. The highlights were some incredibly beautiful and imaginatively shaped pottery and gold jewellery.
Then we began our long walk to the Acropolis in 32 degrees heat and then a huge climb to the top. It was a killer. But so worth the effort. We were struck by the immense stone city walls, a beautifully restored amphitheatre that's used today and then walking through a main gateway, the Parthenon comes into view. How magnificent! It is huge! It is inconceivable that up to the 17th century it was still intact when the Venetians blew it up when they were attacking the Ottomans who had stored their arsenal and gunpowder in it. Such a crime! We marvelled at how spectacular it all was and on our way down we passed a beautiful temple that is quite well preserved and Hadrian's Library built in 132 AD. Almost everywhere we look there is some reminder of the magnificence that was once Ancient Greece.
