Flag of Canada  , Ontario,
Saturday, July 2, 2011

Saturday 2nd The storm had blown itself out overnight. I continued North on Highway 61, crossing into Ontario, Canada, which was largely on holiday for the Canada Day (1st July) week-end. I took King's Highway 11/17 (the Trans Canada Highway) around the North shore of Lake Superior, surface area approx 31,800 square miles (largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area - compare to 'proper' Yorkshire at approx 6,000 square miles!), following the Southern branch (King's Highway 17) after Lake Helen. It was noticeable when the highway pulled away from the Lake, as the temperature rose 10-15 F, such was the affect of the cold wind coming off the water, which also was causing fog. I passed through White River, where Harry Colebourn bought the real bear 'Winnie' - he took her to the UK with him in World War 1, where she ended up in London Zoo whilst he served in France, whence she was seen by AA Milne, and his son, Christopher Robin. From White River the Trans Canada swung South along Lake Superior's Eastern shore. Whilst passing through the Lake Superior Provisional Park there was a young Black Bear walking along the side of the Highway.  After the Park I found a layby next to the shoreline. I slept in the car there
