You could have shelled out some bucks and spent New Years Eve in one of the local restaurants or clubs.  Lots of people do but I think they missed the boat.

We chose to cook some dinner at home, open a bottle of Ernesto Catena's Tikal and sit on the terrace and take in the New Years Eve fireworks display compliments of the 8 million residents of Lima.

Fireworks  on New Years Eve (and Christmas Eve too) are not put on by the local municipalities or the city of Lima.  It is more like an organized fireworks free-for all.  You go down to the fireworks shop. Buy a box of rockets and bombs or hire some who is selling them in your hood. Wait for the appropriate hour. Lite a fuse.  And run like heck.  When you multiply that ten thousand times you get a 360 degree fireworks display that is out of this world

Where were you on the first nights of the Gulf Wars?  Tuned to CNN?  Crouched in front of the TV  waiting for Baghdad to go boom.  Have another sip of Tikal.  Turn up the sound on your machine.  Channel the Ministry of Defense or Saddam's bunker in Baghdad.  And watch the video.

Quality isn't as good as I would like it to be but you get the idea.   Speaking of ideas, here's  a good one.  Next year, rent a room in a Lima hotel on Christmas or New Years Eve with a good view of the city. Buy a good bottle of wine or your favorite drinks. Invite some friends.  And wait for the city to go BOOM.
