After leaving the Oasis we took a two and a half hour taxi ride toNazca. This was another part of the tour that I was really looking forward to, an opportunity to fly over the Nazca lines, as I have always been fascinated by this ancient culture. These are lines drawn by the ancient Nazca people in the desert as places of ceremonial worship to their Gods and can only be seen properly from the air. The lines consist of many animals such as a monkey, spider etc.. and also unusually what appears to be an astronaut..Nobody knows for sure how the Nazca people drew the lines with such accuracy and there is much debate about what they were actually used for, some theories include an ancient running track or alien landings!!
I took the flight in a six seater plane with five others from the group,I was lucky to get the opportunity to seat in the co-pilots seat and feel confident now that I could fly a plane!!! The flight which lasted for approx a half an hour was amazing and we could clearly see all the shapes in the desert sand, unfortunately none of the pictures I took came out really clear. The ride in the plane was pretty rough with the pilot swerving to the right and the left to ensure that people on both sides of the plane got a proper look. It was an incredible experience to see the lines so clearly and to understand how massive they actually are, some up to 150 metres wide. Another unforgetable highlight in South America..
