On Wednesday we took a four hour bus journey to Banos, the adventure capital of Ecuador. Had the option to do various adventures, white-water rafting, bungee jump etc.. but I decided to do canyoning because I had never done it before. It basically involves you absailing down waterfalls. Only two of us did it, we did a practise absail on a dry wall which was pretty easy once you got the hang of it. The second absail involved a six metre waterfall which was not too high but the force of the water was very strong as you were literally going down the middle of it. Was brilliant though, especially the last two metres where you got to let go all ropes and land in a pool of water. The third and fourth ones were similiar but slightly higher at eight metres. However it was the last one I was most worried about, it was 48 metres!!
I was first to do it and had to absail down three or four metres before you got to a tiny ledge where you could look over and see the drop. No exaggeration to say I nearly shat myself, standing on that edge was the scardest iŽve been in a long time. After much persuasion I eventually went over the edge, the power of the water also forced you to look down which didŽnt help matters at all!! Took about five minutes to get to the bottom but was a brilliant adrenaline rush afterwards, not sure i would do it again though!!
