On Friday the 6th of June we officially began our tour by travelling three hours north of Quito to the famous market town of Otavalo. That evening we got a taxi to Laguna Chuicocha which is a volcanic lake and took a boat ride around it. During the trip to the Laguna wa passed through many local villages and it became obvious how poor the local people were. Many lived in little more than shacks on the side of the road with a small piece of land and a few cattle to survive with. Despite this the people seemed genuinely friendly and happy.

On Saturday we spent the day at the markets, which are one of the biggest in South America. The town is transformed as thousands of stalls are set up along the streets and squares selling traditional Ecuadorian clothes, carpets, paintings etc..all with bright colours and designs. There was also a large animal market, where I saw my first Lama, and a fruit market.

That evening we returned to Quito to spend the night.
