HOLYCRAP, I'M IN THAILAND!! What a trip. Some of the details:
I arrived at Logan cool, calm, relaxed, zen-like. When I got to the auto check-in thingy, it said Problem, See Representitive. Uh oh. Apparently they wouldn't let me leave because I didn't have an onward ticket that was within thirty days! I had to buy a refundable ticket for 882.00. What a pain. But, got that done and on to the plane.
Next was the long-assed flight. I mean LONG. I was able to sleep for most of the Tokyo-Bangkok leg, so that knocked 5 hours off, but still a long trip. I had the window and some old hoochie had the aisle, and there was noone in the middle which was nice. Except when I would get up to stretch, she kept taking my pillows. ARRR!
So we get to BKK, and they set us off on the runway instead of the regular terminal action. The heat was fine, but the humidity sure is a killer. Of course, they didn't care whether or not I had an onward ticket and the desk was closed, so I couldn't return the ticket last night. So now I have to make the trip back, but oh well. Then, because we were late, the bus had run it's last trip to Khao San rd. It was OK though, I took a taxi and it was 350B, not too bad.
Rambuttri was of course full, and the next place had no air-con, so I decided to walk around a bit. There was some kind of political rally going on that got caught up watching, and by the time I started looking for rooms again there was no rooms anywhere. I ended up finding this alleyway that claimed to have rooms, but of course they were a little ways away. "My friend take you on moto, OK?" What the hell, so I fought off the crowds and jumped on the back.
I forgot that they drive on the left, so at first I was quite concerned about his driving methods. I thought he was going the wrong way down one-ways, so I was relieved to remember the whole left-hand thing. Then he started really going the wrong way down one-ways and closed streets, but we made it there in one piece somehow.
The place was OK, air-con and it's own toilet, but no windows. I think the whole no windows combined with getting some sleep on the plane made me feel less than acclimated, so hopefully I can get a room that has a window for tonight.
It's hot today, but not too bad. The humidity is worse than the heat, but then again it's only 9 or 10 AM here (not sure which). I may be dying come 3pm. I'm planning on just securing a good room and getting the whole plane ticket thing taken care of today. I may head down to the Grand Palace if I get time today, if not tomorrow.
That's it for the first installment. I'll try to do this thing on a regular basis, if only for my own benefit. Good times,
Ken
