Anyway, after eating and drinking our goodies, we headed to the train station and began to wander if we had really been strict about the amount of luggage we'd taken with us because our backpacks were feeling like they were laden with lead ... we decided there wasn't much more we could've left behind and we'd just have to deal with it and so we finally arrived at the train station ..
Silkeborg (central Jutland) was our first destination outside of Copenhagen and we took a lovely train ride to Arhus followed by a bus ride to the heart of the Lakes District of Denmark. The hostel in Silkeborg was by far the best I've ever stayed in and we had our very own little cabin right by the water's edge. Apart from the fact that we didn't leave the heater on overnight on the first night and we woke up freezing the next morning it was a wonderful place.
We did some canoeing on our first full day there which was a very peaceful and relaxing experience right up until some German sounding kayaking group come along and started yelling at one another across the serene lake. We took off and found another beautiful spot though so all was good! After a couple of hours we thought we'd better call it a day otherwise our arms might fall off and it also looked like it was about to rain so we checked out the Silkeborg museum where a well-preserved bog find from the early Iron Age, called the "Tollund Man" is kept. He is a mere 2,400 years old and just looks like he is sleeping ... a bit scary looking but rather interesting.
The next day we took a boat ride to Himmelbjerget ... Denmark´s 2nd largest mountain I think (or should I say hill). We hiked up the whole 147 metres of it and then decided to strain ourselves a little (not) and go the extra 20 metres up the tower on top of it for a brilliant view over the lakes and forest (well, it was an excellent view right up until the rain started bucketing down just seconds later ... bugger!) Luckily it didn´t last for long though and we walked back down and took the boat to another beautiful spot for some hiking around a very clear lake
Anyway this is turning into a very long story and I´m sure you´d appreciate me abbreviating a little SO ... other things worth a mention are as follows in point form
* Went to the very tip of Denmark and put our feet in both oceans ... for the life of me I cant remember what both are called know but if you are keen to know just have a look at a map.
* Went to Aalborg to visit a wonderful friend from my London days, called Monica, and her to be hubby very shortly Kristoffer. We had the pleasure of staying in their home and even though we hadn't been travelling for very long at that stage it was marvellous kicking back in a home (sitting on the toilet and not wearing thongs in the shower is always a good thing) and with Monica's amazing cooking to boot we were very spoilt ... tak again Monica and Kristoffer!!!
