Caño Hondo & Samana
Hey guys! There is a lot to write about, but I'll try to keep this condensed. I can't even believe how fast the time is going by; it's already the end of March, and I keep hearing from other volunteers that time just flies during your service.
Last weekend we went to a place called Caño Hondo, which was a great trip. It's really close to Sabana, and the locals love it. It's a place where they have used the river that flows through here to make these natural waterfalls and pools. So there are 7 pools all over to swim in, so we all spent the day lounging by the pools, reading, and drinking an occasional piña colada...such a great day just hanging out with all the girls.
Last Wednesday, ahh, we went to Samana. Ok guys, this is a place that when you come we can go to for some amazing beaches. It's about an hour boat ride from Sabana de la Mar, and we spent the day walking around the town and then went to this little beach to hang out for a bit. We didn't get to spend too much time there because the boat leaves at like 3, but it's definitely a place that you could spend a vacation going to the beaches and touring all the beautiful landscape. I want to go back to do some more exploring someday when I have more time.
We only have two more weeks here in Sabana, which doesn't even seem possible. Next weeks, it's Semana Santa, which is Holy Week, and is a really big deal here. Everyone comes to this town, too, because of the beaches and access to Samana, as well. There is a lot of family, eating, drinking, and of course, dancing. We have been going out dancing every weekend, and every time I feel like I'm getting better, I realize that I'm still pretty awful! J But I'm trying, maybe after two years I'll be the dancing queen, but for now, I still just like to sit back and watch.
This week, training has been pretty intense. We had our Country Director come to interview us about our future sites, which made us all a little nervous and anxious! Then we gave another Technical Presentation in Spanish in front of our training director, people visiting, all of our Spanish professors, and the nurse! I was so stinking nervous, I thought I was going to puke in front of that poor class.
During the nights, we had more medical sessions, and by the time I'm through my two years, I'm pretty sure that I will have had every shot known to man. The medical sessions were pretty funny, well not funny, but ya know, it was all about all of the STDs we can get here, and we each had to give a presentation about our STD, and I got to present about gonorrhea, so if anyone needs some info about this, let me know, I am now an expert. The second night was about drinking here in the DR...very interesting.
The weekend is here, and it is so needed! This week was stressful, and we are all excited to relax, and it´s a girl´s birthday on Saturday, so we are having a party and going out dancing. Ah, and tomorrow, we are going to Haitises National Park, which is a must see in this country, so we are lucky to get to go.
