Some downsides of the DR

Ok, so I´ve been a little sick the past couple of days and people have been writing saying that I´m all living the good life here, so I decided to write about a few of our realities here in the beautiful DR. Life really is good here, I´m not complaining at all. The DR has been compared to the country club of the Peace Corps because it´s a great country. BUT it is still a developing country with lots of problems, as well, or else we wouldn´t be here.
While we are training in the city, we do have some luxeries that we won´t have in the country, like running water and electricity. I´m actually really lucky to have both all day every day, because even most of the people in the city do not have electricity for most of the night, which is a pain. So, when I get to my site, I´m really hoping for running water...I think I can live without electricity, but water is a necessity for me.
I did get to go to the beach last weekend, but really, we are in training 6 days a week for 8 to 9 hours a day, absorbing A LOT of information and trying to learn the language as well, so it can be a little exhausting at times, but it is all good info and necessary for us. And about the beach, on the drive there, there were 15 of us in the car, AND I was sitting next to the 100 yr. old great grandma, yes 100 yrs. old. She is amazing, and I can´t believe how active she is, but half way through the trip, she starts throwing up into her towel, and I am literally sitting right on her pretty much ´cause there is no space! I do not do well with people getting sick, so the whole time I am about gagging and freaking out a little that this sweet old lady is dying next to me...she´s 100, who knows how much she can take!
And the being sick thing REALLY sucks. I have been pretty sick the last two days, and that in itself just makes you want to be at home with all your comfortable things! But I am running out of time, so I need to end this! Things are good here, but I just wanted to give some realities of what we really do on a daily basis and what we deal with. But like I said, I´m not complaing, we are pretty lucky!! I´ll write more after I get back from my visit this week to the mountains. Take care!

LOL, i shouldn't really laugh but you don't really need to be known that just your presence kills centenarians
