It just felt like yet another of those days which never end when trying to travel any kind of distance in Thailand. Got picked up by 'taxi' which was a pick up which the only reason I didn't fly out of the back was there were too many people in it for us not to move on mass. Then they chucked a couple of huge backpacks on top of us. Luxury Thai travel as usual. Then just dropped us in the middle of nowhere with no instructions on how to get anywhere. Eventually after a 2 hour wait the ferry turned up. Spent it chatting to a kiwi couple who had got fried by their suncream - note to sel DONT buy cheap suncream! I think they were more burnt than if they hadn't used suncream at all...but they did buy a brand called Samui so can't say I am over surprised.
Then we had to change to another boat at Phangan and it was packed so no stretching out. Just listened to music and tried to not stand up too much as I was getting dizzy from my ears. Then as we get to Samui it starts to piss it down with rain - first time in 3 weeks and then we get the lovely wet dog smell as everyone comes below deck with wet clothes. People are pretty selfish and not letting people sit because they want space for their bags etc. The journey just felt like it lasted forever.
When we docked at Surathani it was chaos with millions people hanging around no-one saying when or where to go to different destinations. I met a couple of English girls but they were so negative I limited my exposure. They obviously hated Asia and were being pretty rude to the Thais and moaning constantly. Finally we got a bus after everyone left. There was a 'toilet' onboard which were 2 buckets. When we eventually stopped there was a queue for the girls toilets a mile long and the guy kept hooting as if to drive off. The internal dilemma of explode from the litre of water I had drunk or risk being left behind. They did begrudgingly wait for everyone in the end.
Again stress getting off at the other end at yet another bus station at night. Although it was slightly easier as I had prebooked my accomodation and the bus was filled with travellers so I didn't stick out as much. It all felt like it worked out with the taxi and hostel and dinner. Relief!

Hi Kelly, We are just back from a weekend in Spain - flying Ryanair from Luton which is close to a third world travel experience ! Bet your bum is sore by now from sitting on all these ferries.
Not long now to Singapore and back in the "civilised world" again....keep on trucking.

Hey I feel like I have been in the excess of Spain the last couple of days. Phuket is almost worse than Costa Del Sol! People bake themselves in the sun all day then watch ping pong shows and get wasted at night. Not my scene at all!

I reckon the fake sun cream, travel chaos, bucket toilets and assumed lack of triple-quilted loo roll are just little quirks thrown in for tourists! Just like in London where you have the inexplicable appearance of perfectly sane people purchasing union jack boxer shorts, or scoffing jellied eels.... Mmm, see what you're missing being away!?

On an utterly unrelated note, what's lighting up your ebook device (kindle?) on these 12-hour trips? Any travel reading recommendations (as you are surely the expert now...)?

Hey I can't read on the bus as I get car sick so the fact the Kindle doesn't have backlighting doesn't bother me too much. I have been reading about a guy who spent a year sampling the 'Thai Ladies' pretty offputting but bit like a car crash too that you can't put it down.
