Las Vegas - the epitome of a golden cage; certainly worth seeing, and even more worth leaving.  Here, the young and sexy seemingly never age; excess food and drink never makes you ill (or if it does, a hotel staffperson from a 3rd world country quickly arrives to clean up the evidence); corporate owned businesses (your only option) are your friends, because they're strategically (repetitively) positioned for your convenience and the crap they serve here is identical to the crap they serve back home.

In fact, I saw very little of Las Vegas (similar to most tourists I imagine), and should therefore clarify my frame of reference as, "The Strip".  The casino resort lined Las Vegas Boulevard assails the senses with its looming facades, garish signage, perpetual noise (primarily in the form of piped in music- everywhere), persistent sex trade advertisers and masses of tourists in various stages of delight, disorientation, inebriation, and disgust. It's no wonder that each time I ventured out of our room I returned exhausted, slightly dazed and confused, but mostly, grateful for an encounter with silence and personal space.

The strip is actually very well designed to serve its primary function- money making.  Its masses (both human and vehicular), coupled with the immensity of the casino/hotel's labyrinth-like interiors, create a sense of unease about leaving, once one has arrived.  The Strip leverages this dilemma.

Despite the above, I'm not engaging in a rant, really.  It was my idea to journey into Las Vegas, and I'm glad that we did.  The luxury room with king size bed and plasma TV, gym workout and room service were nice treats.  But best of all, was the dose of reality born out of delusion.  Pleasure is nice, but often not as pleasurable as one thinks it will be, and certainly, not lasting.
