I feel like I have told my plans of what I will do when I am finished in Okinawa over 20 times now. But apparently, there are lots of people, including my mother, who were quite unaware until recently. So then, who the hell am I telling? Or am I just imagining it all? Alas it must be all the sweet Japanese teachers, friends, students, and coworkers I will miss so much. Or else I am talking to myself, in which case someone should take me to a doctor quickly before my medical insurance runs out! I have been grappling with mixed emotions towards leaving this place. At first I was very sad to be leaving, not sure if I was ready yet. Then I was really upset at the thought of leaving my friends here. That will of course be the hardest part. Fear, of the future and its uncertainty also struck me for a while. Stressful ideas of all there is to do before leaving....all these things circled my in head. Gradually, I am getting use to the idea that I will be leaving, though it will still be difficult, I have come to terms with it
When you live any where for a significant amount of time you grow attached to it. It becomes a part of you. I did not choose to come to Futenma High school. I did not choose to come to Okinawa. I did choose to come to Japan. But I really could not`t have lived in a better place for the last two years if I had picked it myself. I was very, very lucky to spend two years here. To have made wonderful friendships and shared unforgettable experiences!
Ok now I must move to what`s next or I fear I`ll shed tears here in the teachers room! Plan A got thrown out the window. But it was replaced by plan B which seems almost as good, if not better so I am very happy and looking forward to what is to come!
Here is the plan in simple detail-
Leave Okinawa in the first week of August.
At the end of August leave for.............Scotland!!!
Romp around the UK and Eastern Europe for a few weeks (85 days to be exact). Where in Eastern Europe??? Don`t know yet! That was the change of plans. We (that wonderful Scotsman and I) were going to do Denmark, Germany, Italy, and France. All lovely countries and on the list of must see. But we were going to try to do it cheaply and quickly. It is not hard to get around these countries by train and what not. And so on a bit of a whim we decided that maybe Eastern Europe should be done instead because, we are young, it is slightly more adventurous, and cheaper! So Czech Republic, Austria, Bosnia, Croatia, Romania- Look out here we come!
After the jaunt around Europe, I`ll be home for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Events that I am really, really, really looking forward to. The familiarity and comfortableness of home during the holidays are something I have really missed. That and the snow. Oh the snow. I will be back to MN in the middle of November and you might find me wandering outside alone, with my tongue out waiting for my first snowflakes to fall on it in two years!!! Or rolling around in it if there is enough already on the ground! Oh snow. Glorious snow! I cannot wait til we meet again!
Then hopefully, if all goes well, there will be a certain special guy coming to visit Minnesota for a bit in January and February.
And then------------------------the hope/plan/wish/desire/idea? is to volunteer in South America. Most probably Bolivia. Most probably for a few months. But we will go into more of that later, when there is more information available.
Hope you all are doing well!
