The first day-trip that Maria and I took saw us head west of Victoria, on highway 14 to Sooke.  We decided to check out a place reputed to be something of a local hangout: the Sooke Potholes.  While this regional park didn't quite live up to the mental image the name evokes, it was a nice, remote area to escape from the crowds and noise and simply walk in quiet solitude along a winding river system.  While our exploration began with a nice, sunny day, that quickly changed to... that's right, you guessed it!  Rain.  Despite our raingear, the cool coastal air eventually began to chill us to the bone (as anyone who has ever lived near the coast will undoubtably attest to) and we decided to head back to Victoria in the early afternoon.  Needless to say, we returned to the house under blue skies.

After skimming through the Tourism Vancouver Island visitor guide, we felt a trip north (back towards the ferry terminal at Swartz Bay) to Sidney was in order.  This nice, quaint town of 11,000 people is located about 25 mins north of Victoria, just off highway 17.  After driving through some of the streets, we ended up at the Shaw Ocean Discovery Center aquarium.  While rather small overall, the display tanks were themselves very large and allowed one to easily glimpse some of the different critters that call the Salish Sea home.  The staff here were very friendly, passionate about their work, and excited to take us and point out some of the notable creatures, including a Wolf Eel, and a Giant Pacific Octopus (both of which we would never have spotted on our own...).

We visited a couple bookstores on our way out of town - Sidney claims to have more bookstores per capita than anywhere else in Canada, and then returned to Victoria, to await the arrival of friends...
