Where I stayed
Nice smooth ferry journey and taxi transfer. They have a thing about colour coded stickers in Thailand, as part of this great system to get tourists to the right place. You're not a name, you're not a number, but you are a red oval sticker with Phi Phi family written on - this means you get the 2:30pm ferry to Phuket, where you are transferred by minivan to Phuket backpacker hostel. It's simple, but genius!
First thing Keiron said he noticed about Phuket town was that it was far more "local" (complete lack of tourist tack) the cost of beer and internet was significantly cheaper than Phi Phi. The hostel was realy nice and clean, with free internet and we had a 4-bed dorm all to ourselves (like most of the other guests). And the toilets had toilet roll, soap AND a towel to dry your hands
Day 1 - After sorting laundry and booking bus tickets to Bangkok for the following evening we got the bus to Patong, the main tourist beach in Phuket. DONT GO. (Sophie says it's not that bad but to be fair after Phi Phi anything looks bad). It is a long stretch of beach with lots and lots of touts selling everything you can imagine, including non-beach related items such as watches and rugs. We could just about understand the reasoning behind selling sunglasses and shawls, tanning oil and aloe vera. It's also completely westernised with a Starbucks, McDonalds, Boots, etc. and as a result plenty of spoiled tourists. However, once you'd paid for your sun lounger the beach staff were pretty helpful and would turn it round for you/put it back under the umbrella depending on how much sunbathing you wanted to do - we enjoyed that part of the spoiled-tourist attraction!
Sophie didn't feel great and opted for chips in the food court for lunch, which had repurcussions once we got back - the last time she was sick it was also after eating chips too...bad pattern emerging
Day 2 - managed to check out by 11 (just about, Sophie still wasn't feeling great and reeeally wanted to sleep some more!) but left our bags in the hostel so we could explore further. Got the bus to Karon beach this time, which was much nicer! Lay there most of the afternoon and then had pizza, before heading back to take the bus to Bangkok.
Having booked onto a night bus we weren't expecting to sleep much, for the first few hours they played films quite loudly in Thai anyway! First up was a comedy so we got the slapstick humour, followed by Knight and Day (fortunately) dubbed in Thai! However, again simple storyline so we followed most of it. They also had lights out after which was unexpected but nice, and Sophie slept reasonably well (as usual) through till 7am. Keiron didn't have his best night's sleep since being here and admits to being grumpy today because of it!
