The first thing we did (after checking in to our hostel - in an old Georgian building apparently, see pics!) was to head to the Petronas Towers. They are seriously high!!!
After that we headed to the city's 'green lung', a jungle in the central hilly area. Climbed hundreds of steps - we later found out there were 460-something, and had a go on the jungle gym halfway up (I suspect there are crazy fitness enthusiasts who run up those stairs and do all of the exercise stations, but not in the heat in the middle of the day which we attempted...). We did make it to the top, but decided not to go up the KL tower as it's an observation tower similar to the one in Melaka but much more expensive
The evening was spent recuperating, doing laundry, and munching on some yummy food in one of the local eateries. Keiron and the owner both found it fairly hysterical that I was red-faced and crying from the chilli sauce - I thought it was ketchup so enthusiastically took a bit bite of my omelette-come-pancake filled with rice thing and suffered the consequences...
Day 2 in KL was all about getting to the Batu Caves, taking the local bus which is always an adventure, and then climbing the 200 and something steps to the caves! There's a statue of a buddha outside which is really really big (42m high according to Lonely Planet!), and although Batu houses a Hindu temple the caves themselves are pretty impressive too.
In the afternoon we made it to the Colonial Quarter, and had a bit of a walk around the Lake Gardens - we were attempting to get to the National Museum but stopped at the largest mosque in KL on the way, had to go inside as it was open for tourists (you have to see Keiron in the purple robes we had to wear - again see pics!), and then the heavens opened. We got a taxi back with a Canadian who was also stuck in the rain then took shelter inside an internet cafe to book the next few day's travel arrangements.
Later in the evening we headed out, met a number of fellow travellers and ended up having a fun but very late night! It's good to hear what other people have been getting up to and swap recommendations.
