its a drag to get away from coober pedy - a shanty town but scratch the surface and you find buried treasure! down to erth, the oh so cosy dug out has been a fab place to stay and we shall recommend it to others heading this way. the owners rose and alex have done a wonderful job! the garage in town serves up a mega breakfast that sets us up for the day. on the rioad theres still little wildlife to be seen but a highlight on this journey is spotting the unusual trees on the roadside - like the ones on the nullabor the stewart highway has a tyre tree a coke can tree (bevs favourite of course) a bottle tree and probably more we didnt see! all indicators of the aussie sense of humour- in our fast hire car we whizz by without leaving our own contributions but thanks to all those who did bother to stop and decorate an old stumpy - they gave us a good laugh! its teatime when we reach port augutta as the locals call it. we try another visit to our friends ken and lindas sister's house - sucess this time- we get to wish betty and john a happy new year and pass on a hug from our friends! quelle surprise! rather than stay another night at the big 4 park where we stayed on our way up we go to the top tourist shoreline caravan park - what a dump!never mind its just for 1 night - if they let us go in the morning- with germans surrounding us on all sides we think weve found stalag 14! maybe this last week of luxury hotels has spoilt us! a phone call to melbourne and we hear that harry hs been really rough and under the doctor - get well soon h youve got a plane to catch on wedsday! a kfc in town provides us with more than we can eatand a crap film on the crappy chalet tv is nearly enough to send us to sleep on the lumpy bed. jim ends up in a bunk and nattie joins her mum in the too small double - roll on tomorrow ...
