It was raining for the first two days of my stay in Queenstown, so it was not until the sky cleared on the third and the fourth day that I found out what Queenstown's scenery is all about. If you go up to the skyline complex on Bob's peak, either by foot or by using the gondola, you have a very good view on the city, Lake Wakatipu and its mountains (especially the snowcapped Remarkables are an impressive sight). This scenery is also what Peter Jackson and his crew were looking for the Lord of The Rings trilogy, as many scenes were shot in this region. For getting a better view on the region and how it is shaped, I went on a 4WD tour which takes you up to The Remarkables, the Arrow River and Skippers canyon, and which includes some of the locations used in the LOTR movies.
Some historic detail: Queenstown's region was a gold-mining area in the old days. In fact, the Shotover River was one of the richest rivers in the world. I tried my luck in the Arrow River, but all I found were a few tiny ones. It seems that I will not return home being rich.
