tomorrow morning we are flying out of Argentina and in to Santiago, Chile. seeing as i appear to be really terrible at keeping this up to date there are lots of things that we have been occupying ourselves with during our (5 week) stay here - but, for want of time and energy, i fear i am simply going to have to pick just a few to note.
being the 'culture vultures' that we are we went to the theatre but unfortunately, due to a domestic emergency, we had to leave before the end. i would like to pretend that i understood what was going on but i didnt even understand the english synopsis so the play remains a mystery to me... we then decided to go to see a small production called Mamushka - listed as some sort of dance which 'captured the spirit of the old circus' and it was incredible! very like cirque du soliel but much smaller and i think it was in someones house not a theatre because it was tiny and we sat on cushions on the floor but it was so amazing. and really cheap. my faith in the dramatic abilities of the portenos has been renewed!

we have also been 'up the coast' (as in 10 minutes along the river) to Tigre where we took a boat ride and enjoyed the sun from the river.

we also learnt that tango started in brothels, or more accurately outside them to keep the queuing customers entertained.

however, possibly our least cultural (but very entertaining) excursion was to the theme park Tierra Santa. there are no rides, just life size plastic portrayals of the life of jesus. including the crusifiction with the two theives. apparently it is the only park of its kind in the world and it is not really hard to see why! it was incredibly bizarre and i can't work out if it is serious and religous or is it meant to be humourous and perhaps even controversial? i just don't know. the best part was when the 40ft jesus rose from the grave (which, just in case you missed it, he does every  hour - more regular during peak season). the experience has done nothing for my spirituality.

any way for now we are moving onwards and westwards, hoping that we will be able to cram everything in to our backpacks! i keep thinking i am finished then i stumble across something else i had forgotten.
