So on New Year's Eve we spent the night at an indeed long white sandy beach with a bottle of champagne, fireworks, fire-juggling shows and great music. I think we did our homework! :)
We spent five days on this wonderful laid back island, went diving twice at two of the best dive sites in the world where we got very close to five leopard sharks up to 2.5 meters long, enjoyed perfect sun sets at the beach, explored the island by motorbike, and enjoyed Thip's beef with green curry and other delicious Thai food. Perfect.
Without any plans for New Year, we arrived in Bangkok on Christmas Day. Optimistically, we went to travel agencies to get some information but we learnt that hotels as well as transportations to all different kinds of islands were already booked out. Only luxurious hotels and expensive domestic flights were available. We were suggested to go to the north first to spent New Year with some tribes, monkeys and elephants and then to head south to the islands after New Year. What? We are in Thailand and there won't be partying under fireworks at the beach for us?! We didn't want to believe that and immediately invested in some internet to do some research. This was our result: A nice hotel with AC, hot water and cable TV on the island Ko Lanta off the Andamen Sea which is known for its diving and long white sandy beaches for a reasonable price!
