When we arrived at the top of the Colca Valley on the first day by bus, we saw an area of astounding scenic beauty, with giant Andean terraces, a deep canyon that reach a depth of 4160 metres and some giant Andean Condors soaring over it. Wow! The view gave us goosebumps and as the descent to the valley was scheduled on the first day, it made us nervous. A narrow, sandy and pebbly path led downwards in a sharp zig zag pattern. With a lot of sliding and trying not to fall on our bums or worse down the edge, we managed to arrive safely at our first lodge at the tiny village San Juan
The second day was smooth, very smooth. We trekked 2 hours along to Colca River in the valley, passed beautiful waterfalls and got to Sangalle which is also called the Oasis: Tiny straw huts and azure blue pools, surrounded by jungle-like vegetation and fauna. We got to relax the rest of day in paradise.
And that was quite necessary for the trek on the last day as we had to ascent the canyon. To avoid the strong sun, we started off at 5:30 am, before breakfast, with an empty stomach. It was steep and dusty. And there were so many big and uneven Inca steps, which reminded me of Machu Picchu, and made me swear – swear really badly. Before I got even half way up, I wanted to quit. I wanted to rent a mule which will take me up the canyon for just couple of bucks. But then I saw Mihai, much further up the path than I was, marching continuously as if it was his way to work, like climbing the stairs to his office at the 18th floor in a Frankfurter skyscraper. “Arrgh, I can make it, too.” And I made it! About 45 minutes after Mihai, I arrived at the top of the canyon from where the Oasis was only a small green dot. After this morning trek, the breakfast tasted fantastic!
