Life begins at 6-00am when everyone comes for breakfast; coffee, waffles and maple syrup!! We have had a hugely successful first day seeing over 70spp. First stop was George Reiffel Reserve - a wetland with planted trails. This was a great place with many waterfowl, warblers, chickadees and sparrows. First squirrels seen and genuine beaver damage to trees [many trees are protected by wire to slow the beavers down.......
Second stop - Iona Island sewage ponds and surrounds. This was fanatstic - a loo with a view and no [real] poo. One of the more scenic sewage treatment plants that you would want to visit. Snow covered peaks in the background. Unsmelly lakes in the midground and great birds in the foreground! The second bird seen was a Western Bluebird, an attractive male, and a bird that put many of the local birders into a minor frenzy. Apparently western bluebirds [or any bluebirds for that matter] are never recorded this close to the coast. Birders arrived steadily throughout the afternoon for a peek however the bird must have realised he was in the wrong place and had fled.
Too many birds to really consider but our first hummingbird [and a nest], bald eagle, warblers, blackbirds etc etc plus every BC swallow possible. So now I'm very tired and plan to catch up on some sleep. ciao.
