We got up and had breakfast at the hotel. Luckily there was lots of coffee as I desperately needed some of that.:-) Once we had eaten, Nizwa Fort was our destination for the day. Mubina said it was amazing to see and that the Souk was good for shopping. Darn.
As we drove around, I was amazed at how organized this country was! Up until 15 years ago, there had only been about 10 miles of paved road in the entire country but now the entire has amazing roads. People follow the road signs and lanes, don't honk at every thing and know how to drive around the circles. The other thing that amazed me was all the green I saw-trees, grass, and flowers along with clean streets. I definitely knew I wasn't in Amman right now!
There was a brief side road drive to see some ruins that looked interesting. It took us about 2 hours to get there only to find it closed. So, not to be deterred, Anita and I took a turn thinking it would get us into the fort but no. Instead, we have a 20 minute drive through lots of one way streets in the heart of the city. It was truly amazing to not have a clue where to go and how we made our road choice was based on the width of the road. Finally we got ourselves out to a road and took a left. That was the right was to go but we were on the way other side of the city and needed to get back to the fort and souk. We found both and parking was no problem as there were about 5 cars there. There was one shop open so of course we had to shop there and snoop around. My purchases? A couple of postcards and some beads.
Oh, did I mention that is was hot here? I am guessing that it was close to 43'C so we drank a lot of water but we were in need of some caffeine in the shape of diet cokes. We stopped for gas and put in a half of a tank for whopping.....$3.00US!!!!! The pop was less than 50cents a can so we were happy on both fronts. :-)
Once we got back to the hotel, we were hungry so we had something to eat in the small restaurant where we had breakfast that morning. After lunch, we went back to the room and relaxed for a while.
Dinner that night was at the Rock Bottom restaurant at the hotel. I ate the fresh calamari with a tomato sauce that was amazing and a good Foster's beer. Dinner was filling but was about $17US!!! We were tired and so back to do some reading and go to bed after watching the news.
