There are really no words right now to describe Venice.  It has been the highlight of our trip so far.

After a beautiful drive through Austria and into Italy yesterday, we were not sure what to expect in Venice.  Our drive through Venice was a bit underwhelming, in a pretty ordinary European city.  We checked into the hotel and got back into the bus to head out for "Dinner in Old Venice".

Globus had rented private water taxies to take us into the old town, to San Marco Square.  We stood up in the back of the taxi for the best view of the Grand Canal, and all the smaller canals that go through the buildings.  Amazing.  We went under several of the bridges that span the canals, and could see lots more down all the side canals.  The buildings are so very old, and so very beautiful.  There are so many architectural styles that you cannot even count them all.  We strolled through the main square and down a tiny alley to our restaurant where we had a delicious Italian dinner.  Sadly, we did not have too much time to explore, but that was okay.  We knew we would be back.

This morning we did go back and started out with a guided tour of St. Marks church, and the Doge Palace.  The history behind these ancient buildings and the early Venetians is so interesting!  We then carried on to the Murano glass-blowing factory, where we saw a glass vase and a glass horse created.  We found some "On the Wave" sculptures like the four we have, and we able to find out some interesting facts about them.  And yeah, we bought some new stuff!!!  Umm....Kristine.....can you watch the mail for a package?  They say delivery is about 4 weeks.
We had a delicious spaghetti lunch and then explored on our own.  Maps are pretty useless in Venice....found that out the hard way!  But, we did have a nice glass of wine in a pretty little outdoor bar in the main square, and later on a cup of the best icedcoffee in another pretty little outdoor bar in the main square.  When the time came to get on the water bus to leave, we were actually sad.  Venice gets into your heart pretty quickly!

Happy Mother's Day, Ma!!
I heard Venice has kind of an odd smell because
of all the still water in the canals - is that true?
Even if it is, who cares!! Ha ha :)
