My flight from London had some amazing views of the French countryside and the Swiss Alps--totally incredible! Despite being tired, I wasn't able to sleep on the flight, but it was probably a good idea in terms of my jet lag! Arrival was smooth (albeit is a bit late at 10pm)--but a funny sight going through immigration... The woman in front of me in immigration was dressed in funky clothes, with an early-Madonna-esque veil and lots of eyemake up. I was curious, but even more so when we turned the corner into baggage claim and pop music came on, the girl threw on sunglasses and started posing, and men with cameras surrounded her and snapped her photo
Erin and I successfully rendezvoused at the Greek airport--without mobile phones or text messaging! After we hugged and said hellos, I had a sandwich and we set off for the metro to catch the train to the hotel I'd booked in the city centre. However, the metro decided to close from the airport earlier than normally scheduled (or rather, from when our guidebooks and some local friends *said* the metro should run) and we were stuck seeking alternative options. We both agreed it was very nice to have a travel companion with whom to be dealing with these minor travel hiccups late at night. We found the airport bus and patiently waited outside the terminal for it, only to be told 10 later that we had to go down a level to get the bus to pick us up, as the stop we were at was only for drop off. So down we went, only to have the bus that was there zoom off while we were buying tickets. Ah well. We got on the next bus and nearly 45 minutes later we were in the city centre. We slung our packs on and walked a few blocks down to our hotel. Our double turns out to have only one bed (how come all the singles I had in Asia had two beds, both the size of the bed at our hotel in Greece?). However, what better way for sisters-in-law to bond than by sharing a bed? :) At 1pm we turned in, and agreed that a little sleep in was in order. My body was extremely confused after going Singapore to London, and then backtracking to Greece!
We woke up to a glorious day in Greece. Cool air and sunny skies. Must have been in the mid 70F/20C. Perfect. We grabbed a coffee and headed off to the Acropolis
After checking emails now, we're off to dinner and a few drinks. We're sporting matching scarves (different colours) that I picked up in LP (yes, Mom, I got one for you too!), black tops and jeans. :)
Tomorrow we are going to finish off the ancient sights in the center of Athens, get a bus to the Temple of Posieden for sunset, and then catch a VERY early ferry on Sunday morning to Mykonos. Fingers crossed that our hotel has a cancellation, otherwise we are going to have to sort out different accommodation for tomorrow night. Ah well.
Looking forward to the rest of our Greek adventures!
