In order to have a little respite away from the city we have decided to venture into the state of Connecticut for a couple of days and to a small coastal town called Mystic.

Mystic is a world away from New York city. This is a town where total strangers will walk passed you with the biggest beaming smile and offer the chirpiest of good mornings you're ever likely to receive.

This being quite the shock to this pair of temporary New Yorkers, when you throw into the equation that we are English, where spontaneous acts of politeness are virtually frowned upon... we were often left speechless and dumfounded! This was surreal but incredibly nice.

Mystic was just what we were looking for for a classic couple of days away in New England. It was exactly the preconceived image we had of of a small town like this and you could barely walk two metres without seeing a shiny new white picket fence surrounding one these immaculate looking wooden homes.

It is clearly geared up for tourism but with this being the first few moments of the season, we were pretty much the only tourists in town.

It was nice to stroll around and have the town to ourselves, despite how un-pedestrian friendly this place is. We found ourselves going to attractions like the aquarium and seaport which are aimed at young families and it almost felt as though we were scoping it out for the inevitable.

This little town has proven to be one of the big surprises of our entire trip and has taught us a few things as well... like how to tell the difference between a seal and sealion!
