Where I stayed
Nullarbor Roadhouse

Flag of Australia  , South Australia,
Wednesday, June 3, 2009

Left Port Augusta this morning (which we found out was the crossroads of Australia - where east meets west and north meets south) and moved on through the bottom of South Australia.  We did stop at Kimba (claims to be halfway across Australia) and visited the big galah!

The stories of the road trains are true - they are massive and are up to 3 massive trailers long.  When they go past they fly and nearly rip you off the road - our saying is BRACE, HOLD, LEFT - and we move over to the left a little and let them fly past us.

We kept driving and driving with not much to see and we have made it to the East side of the Nullarbor - and its exactly as the name suggests - treeless!! There is nothing at all along the roadside.  But this roadhouse is excellent - just a petrol station in the middle of nowhere with a patch of dirt next to it where you can hook up the power and spend the night Which one is the Galah?

.  Even though we are in the middle of nowhere there are more people here then in some of the parks we have stayed in.  Although the guy at the counter told us to lock everything up at night cause "whatever they can pick up they will walk away with" so the boards have stayed on the top of the Kombi and the bikes have been locked in bigtime!

John found a friend as soon as we pulled up and we now have a dingo sitting at door smelling our sausages.  The best news though is that we have power and have managed to pick up a tv station from the Northern Territory and we have live State of Origin - the first bit of rugby league we have picked up since we watched the game in Canberra.

So John has cooked up our snags and we have biscuits and dip and we are off and racing.  Tomorrow we will be checking out the whales at the Head of Bight and then the rest of the Nullarbor.

To those that are stressed about water, fuel and food we have stocked up and have worked out what the little baby can do so we will be fine!

And a big welcome to Rita who we got online today, welcome and enjoy the blogs.  Next one is Maria!
