Mijas Pueblo is a lovely hiillside town, about 428 metres above sea level, which is still pretty much the same as I remember it when I visited here many years ago; whitewashed houses typical of an Andulusian hillside village, horses and carriages parade the town square, there is a market in the square selling a multitude of reasonable quality souvenirs; donkeys can be hired as well as donkey carts, but we personally feel sorry for the donkeys and wish they wouldn't work them so hard
There are many restaurants and cafes to choose from and prices are not exorbitant. It does have reputedly the oldest bullring in Spain but that is another custom we both disapprove of  and consider to be cruelty to animals; another barbaric blood sport that should be banned who can possibly get pleasure from seeing a bull slowly slaughtered!!
The little church tucked away on the cliffside is an attractive feature. It overlooks the whole valley across to the sea, a wonderful viewpoint. Great care has been taken to provide a garden area and benches to sit on. It is the hermitage of the 'Virgen de la Pena' built apparently by Mercedarian Monks out of an old Moorish castle. The image of the Virgen is the patron saint of the village. According to a legend two young shepherds were led there by a pigeon!!!! They discovered the image of the Virgen concealed in the recess of the tower where it had been hidden for 500 years. It became a sanctuary cave.

At first it just looks like the remains of an old castle but then you notice the cave like entrance and walk into a little chapel filled with flowers and candles. It has displays of costumes and artifacts connected to religious ceremonies and the uniqueness of the place makes it very special. If we were Catholic we would have stopped to pray here, but we can't be  hypocrites.
Back to our local beach for a drink and enjoy watching people wind surfing.
Next to nature is our our favourite temple.

Malcolm on

We love Mijas - have spent a couple of holidays there many moons ago. There's also a faboulous restaurant in Mijas Costa, the name of which escapes me now, where the food was great and the mood was set by a chap playing the piano. Happy New Year to you. We returned from Africa today (01/01/20130 - our last port of call was Cape Town, having been to Mozambique, Tanzania and Kenya. Have to save some pennies now for the next long haul - don't know where yet! Have fun.
