Today we explored Benicassim and the surrounding area.
We had had a lovely stroll along the boardwalk by the sea and then stopped for coffee and brandy at the Torreon Cafe in the Hotel Voramar. We were entertained by the sparrows who wanted to sit with us and share our biscuits. Our view was the Sant Vicent watch Tower (16th Centrury) which is the start of a walk that takes you past many beautiful villas erected at the end of 19th and in the early 20th century when Benicassim was the centre of the jet set bourgeois society from Castelon and Valencia. The Voramar Hotel was a popular party venue and during the Civil war gave accommodation to Hemmingway and many other writers of the day.
There were few tourists about. One could walk the whole length of the promenade if fit for 2-3 miles, we imagine during the height of the season it is manic since the beaches look very safe and are all blue flag beaches.
We went into the town but found it lacking in character probably because it was siesta time and it seemed empty. So we decided to drive up the mountain to the National park area which offered great views to the sea. Kay drove us on a magical mystery tour 'off piste' which took us past several traditional villas and orange groves eventually returning to the main road and a sign post back to Benicassim. We met some delightful donkeys on the way but on the whole there were not many people about! Do they really all go to sleep at lunchtime? for two hours???
