We enjoyed traveling in on the efficient public transport; bus and tram to the city centre getting a good tour of the many monuments and the grand Gothic Cathedral of Saint Andre de Bordeaux en route. There were lots of magnificent fountains and apparently 64 monuments of which at least three are listed as Unesco sites apart from five churches; a grosse cloche (Big Ben???); the Grand Theatre; two palaces and the Porte Cailhau. So there is a lot to commend this city which we felt had a great feel to it partly due to the sunshine and busy street cafes adding lots of atmosphere to the historic city centre.
We enjoyed an expensive coffee in the Place de la Comedie; briefly looked in the windows of the expensive shops in Rue St Catherine; walked along the riverbank promenade to the Pont de Pierre (for bridge enthusiasts this is circa 1810 and has seventeen arches and is 487m long).
We had a lovely lunch at a riverside cafe ( a salmon en croute with a delightful dry crisp white wine) before our return back to camp; stopping en route to pick up some good Bordeaux wine ....well it would be rude not to!!!!!
A fabulous day out making our journey homeward bound a most enjoyable experience.
