Where I stayed
Encosta Cabo Girao
Madeira: Portugal's jewel in the Atlantic, apparently without crime, litter or graffitti, hard to believe but I suppose criminals would have no where to run on this small but perfectly formed island; and it certainly is a beautiful island, the flowers are stunning; birds of paradise and red hotpokers galore, even by the roadside, and the scent, luscious; of flowers, euclalyptus and fennel; it just fills the air.
It's years since I was here last in less happy circumstances; and Colin has not been here before, so we are looking forward to exploring the whole island while we're here. It has a micro-climate so is warmer than the main land and we're told if it appears misty or cloudy in one part of the island just drive around til you get to the sunny side. We'll be testing that theory today, although at the moment it is lovely and sunny
It's New Year's Day and everyting is shut so it's the right day for a drive and a walk and then relaxing by the pool.
This resort; Encosta Gabo Girao; is situated at the top of one of Europe's highest sea cliffs; one of the tallest in the world; half a kilometre into the sky (1900 feet) with panoramic views across the capital and the bay where cruise ships come to view the New Year's Eve fireworks. They were amazing last night; after a superb dinner we went out to view the fireworks from the bowling green while sipping champagne.
Our apartment is lovely with a balcony outside the bedroom and lounge, fully equipped so we can cook ourselves a romantic meal tonight and eat on the balcony overlooking the sea.
It has excellent facilities with outdoor and indoor heated pools and a jacussi, steam room and sauna..Luxury to have a break from the campervan and I have my own personal massuer..Colin...... he's very good you know!!!
Happy New Year everyone from Kay and Colin on their Wintersun Adventure.
