A sprawling city with an historic centre. It does date back to 25BC and has prehistoric evidence in its nearby caves. It still has its city walls containing the old restored medieval town. It is a World Heritage City by UNESCO because of its blend of Roman, Islamic, Gothic and Italian Rennaissance archictecture and has thirty towers from the Muslim period. Since the weather was foggy and cold it didn't endear us to linger too long, this medieval old town in no way compares to those we have seen in France, it was very hard to take photos without getting cars in the picture. Carcassonne, Sarlat and Langres have far more appeal and a sense of walking back in time.
There were however several interesting statues particularly the Rodin exhibition in the Square and some impressive buildings; Iglesia de San Francisco Javier (18th Century)
Hermitage de la Paz; Palacio de los Golfines de Arriba Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo. Queen Isabella apparently stayed there but they wouldn't let Colin in when he knocked on the door.!!
After about two hours wandering around we were frozen so went into a wine bar (as you do!) and had a warming glass of Rioja and some bad tapas which decided us we were better off tucked up in our snug little camper where I could make much nicer tapas and we could drink a whole bottle of Rioja or even two while listening to some good music. So that's what we did.
