What a fabulous day today; we woke to a very misty lake that we couldn't see across; as vision improved we were entertained by the swans gliding by doing their fly by displays.

We decided to explore the lake perimeter and see what villages we would like to return to and explore more. We went to Chanaz a canal side town of great character with a windmill and chateau and oozing charm. Here you could pick up a boat trip on a steam paddleboat barge down the canal or just stop for lunch and enjoy the floral displays and interesting rooftops. The canal goes from the River Rhone to Lac du Bourget connecting the river to the lake. We decided we would try for a complete grand tour on the electric boat tomorrow.

On our continuing journey we went through lovely little villages and hillside vineyards to reach the Lake; it was tempting to stop at some of the caves to try the wine but if we had we wouldn’t have got any further as there were so many.

At Bourget du Lac we discovered there was a canoe race going on; canoes of all sizes and crew numbers from rowing eights to single kayaks and even pedal bikes and surfers it was crazy but fun to watch; we didn’t stay long enough to see the winners but it all looked like huge fun we nearly entered ourselves!!

Next stop Chambery but we found it so busy and hectic we drove straight out again without stopping to look at the famous fountain or hear the bells chime perhaps Saturday is too manic a day to go sight seeing; we may come back but nothing struck us as fantastically inviting despite the history of it once housing the shroud of Turin in its cathedral.

We realised we were missing the best part of the day at our own lake and rushed back to have lunch by the lakeside and watch the swans gliding by like graceful ships.

Out in our canoe we discovered the island in the middle to be home for about 20 herons who suddenly all took flight together what a wonderful sight. So it ended a most relaxing day
