'Youth would be an ideal state if it came a little later in life' (H.H.Asquith)
or as my Mother used to say to me 'I wish I was your age and knew what I know now'
This quotation is apt for today as it has been the most physically demanding challenge so far and we would have loved to do more but simply did not have the energy however it has been a good day as we got up at the crack of dawn and went on the aerial Tram over the lush tropical emerald rainforest. banana plantations, orchards of coconut, mango and papaya trees.
unfortunately we did not see any parrots that apparently are on the island, obviously playing hide and seek today but we did see lots of hummingbirds
There was also many exotic flowers; ginger lilies; the crab claw bird of paradise plant, the tassel flower which was attracting the hummingbirds as well as the hibiscus flowers. There were many trees with medicinal properties in the forest and our guide explained how scientist were still trying to find a cure for HIV from a particular fruit and getting some positive results. There was also the calabash tree bearing huge fruits that are inedible but can be used to make bowls. There were tall gum trees and chatannier trees and the strangler ficus which sends down roots to the forest floor. Ivy grew up the trees in straight lines making lovely patterns on the bark of the trees and the palm trees stood out like little beacons of light
The whole experience was exhilarating as we climbed 2,000 feet up through the canopy.
We would have liked to explore the town but ran out of steam after our rainforest tour. After lunch we had a nap that lasted two hours we were so tired. I took several laps round the top deck and managed to catch the sun setting before dinner and having had a good afternoon nap we were able to enjoy the evening entertainment. We met up with Anna and went to the Coopers bar where Martin Orbidans entertained us with musical melodies and his zany sense of humour until midnight, the latest night we have had so far but great fun.
Consequently we slept like a log til 8a.m. Martinique has many attractions but all the tours seem too challenging for us so we will be staying on board to recouperate from our busy schedule. I think we will need a holiday when we get back to recover from this trip, there certainly is never a dull moment aboard ship.
