Whakapapa Village

Took a lovely two and a half hour walk to Taranaki Falls today, this is Tolkien's 'Lord of the Rings' country. The volcano of Mount Ngaurohoe is Mount Doom and the active crater of Mt. Ruapeho is also in the film as well as the falls and woodlands part of elf country. Mount Tongariro makes up the three mountains and it is indeed an awe-inspiring sight. Blue lakes and Emerald lakes make it quite a surreal landscape. We were tempted by a flight over but at 355$ per person for less than  one hour we decided against it.

The local bar is a chateau, a very impressive building with 5 star prices, it sort of looks incongruous the alpine scenery but they seem to be full with tourists.

Hello Kay and Colin. See you are still enjoying the wonderful scenery in North Island. We had mixed weather for the rest of out trip - think the poor weather followed us for most of the way as we headed south. Caught up with Mary's nephew in Auckland and also saw our friends at Papamoa. Got caught for speeding on Christmas Day as we were heading from Taupo to Napier! Mr Plod showed no mercy even though he did originate from my home county of Kent!! Could not get on the whale watching boats at Kaikoura - the seas had been too rough and there was a backlog of booked people so we opted instead for a trip to watch Albatross - amazing - do go for it if or when you get there. So much to see and do but such little time. Sydney and Singapore were good - the wether also. Just one more episode - on our flight from Singapore to London a passenger in business class (we were in the cattle section) apparently had a heart attack and died - we believe while sleeping - so we had to wait on the tarmac while the paramedics and police dealt with the situation. It's been cold and wet here since we returned on the 5th - missing the 29 degrees of Singapore already. Have fun. Mary and Malcolm
