Day 10
July 11, 2008
Teslin, YT, Canada to Skagway, AK, USA
Today was a rather uneventful day. We drove through the mountains for quite a bit with the only wildlife sighting being a bald eagle. The mountains across the lake were beautiful with the sun rising over them.
We made it through customs and continued through the mountains. The temperature dropped as far down as 42 degrees F. The glaciers are on the mountains, the sun is partly out. We took advantage of arriving here in Skagway at lunch time to have lunch at the Famous Red Onion Saloon. We have walked around town quite a bit and enjoyed taking in the sights and history of the Klondike Gold Rush. Mom got to get 3 geocaches today and I finally got to do my shopping I have been wanting to do. I figure for most part I am done shopping now and can sit back and enjoy taking in the history and scenery.
Tomorrow we will be riding the White Pass and Yukon Railway to the White Pass and sunday we will be going to Juneau on the catamaran and take a wildlife tour. At some point, I think tomorrow, we will drive down to the ghost town of Dyea, which is home to the trailhead for the Chilikoot Trail.
Monday we board the MV Kennikot an dhead to Ketchikan where we will transfer to the MV Columbia to finish the cruise down the Inside Passage.
Tonight, we are going to go to the Soappy Smith Show, "The days of 98". Its a play based on "Soappy Smith" the outlaw here in Skagway during the Klondike Gold Rush. Should be funny and good. Everybody here is all into the part of playing the characters of the day in 1898.
This has been an experience I have always been interested it and to make it seem more real, I am going to get an antique photo of myself dressed the part of a 1800's Dance Hall Girl.
