Vacation Day 5
Grand Prairie, AB to Dawson Creek, BC- mile 0 of the Alaska Highway.
7/6/08

Today started out well, although we have only adjusted one time zone we did manage to sleep a little later than we had. We are now 3 time zones behind home being the Pacific time zone which should prove interesting for sleep tonight. I figure by the time we adjust we will be heading back home. Anyway, We had a really nice place last night with 2 kind size beds and a full suite, lots of room.

We started out driving towards Dawson Creek, picking up one cache in Beaver Lodge, and skipping one cache only after mom (hell bent to get it) went bush wacking and came out soaked (due to wet foilage) and had to change. We scratched out another cache when it looked as though she was going to have to bushwack. As dad would say, she is obsessed with caching. She just can't let one pass by. I will touch on that later. Any way, we picked up 2 caches on the way to Dawson Creek and then 10 in Dawson Creek.

We made Dawson Creek before lunch, and explored the area thouroughly, including the cairn, mile post 0 and many murals and other sculptures Alaska hotel

. We looked around the historic village, the pioneer cemetary, the museums on the building on the Alcan highway. Will post some pics on these.

Now back to the goe-caching. Mother in all her obsession has planned to spend entirely too much time geocaching and less time as a tourist. While I like geocaching, things have a tendancy to happen when you try to follow a GPS in an area you don't know. But the funniest thing was literally the last cache for the day, we almost skipped it because we couldn't find a trail then we found it. We got to the location where I found the cache, pulled it out, and while I was trying to put it back I found a second, then as I was attempting to put them back a SQUIRREL jumped out, jumped on my arm and then lept to the nearest tree branch. I of course a little shocked let out a bit of a yip (at least it wasn't a snake, the yip would have been a scream).

The funny thing here is, my dad, as i have said before, we have a tendancy to crack jokes at each others expense, well that has been occuring lately. Mom in her younger days used to be referred to as the strawberry blonde. Well, we are totally convinced that she IS blonde. To quote dad, "if it doesn't have anything to do with geo-caching, she doesn't have a clue". She pulls into the hotel parking lot, he tells here to park under the canopy, she parks in the drive way. He tells her to back up to get to the parking spot behind her, her response is "you can't back into the spots." We were not telling her to back into the spots just back up enough to pull into the spot BeaverLodge geocache site

. DUH!

Don't get me wrong, I have had a moment or two myself this trip but none quite so continuous. Starting tomorrow, the navigator (me) will be officially retired (you really can't get lost on the Alaska Highway) and she(me) will become the driver and chauffer. Truthfully, trying to be the navigator for my mother can sometimes be a challenge. "Take a right". "A right?" " A right, yes" (She's pointing left). Now at least I do know my left from my rights. Trust me, I am the one with the map.

So any way, we are having a really good time. We are getting cranky at times and tired from still trying to adjust time zones, but are having a good time. We are all a little wiped out from little sleep and lots of walking and hiking today. Myself, I get credit for my little famous thing that always happens on vacation. Yesterday should have been a clue with slipping and slidding but today I did it. I managed to twist the ankle today and sprain to the point of black and blue and swelling. Wouldn't be vacation if I didn't do that. So anyway, as I type this laying in bed vegging for a breif time I now have both legs proped up trying to reduce swelling. Nice, my souvieneer for today, a walking stick.

hey Dawn
Be a little kinder to yourself! How are you going to enjoy your destination if you can't walk? Sounds like a wonderful journey! I'm enjoying your entries.
