July 4, 2008- Day 3
Yorkton, SK to Edmonton, AB Well, today we have made a lot of ground coverage quickly. We are still in the clutches of EST as now we are 2 hours behind EST and were up at 5:30 am today, but hey, it was daylight outside. Not a real exciting day to mention yet, though that can always change at any given time with this family. The temperatures have ranged greatly from 40's to a high of 93 degrees Fahrenheit today. Gas prices have ranged from $3.85 per gallon to $5.20 per gallon. The lowest price was near the Minnesota, North Dakota border and the highest in Saskatchewan, Canada. We managed to pick up 4 geocaches today as there are not all that many on this stretch. Will post one of me getting one of the more unique caches, which was decorated as a bird house.
Lots of canola is growing up here, the fields are yellow. Have yet to encounter any free range cattle. Lots of reading occurring today as with sleeping. Did make a stop for ice cream earlier and since we are making good time we may be able to enjoy the water-park tonight at our hotel tonight, which is the Ramada in Edmonton, Alberta. We finally got to the Ramada after driving through Edmonton for an hour (666,000 population) it was not a mater of getting lost as a mater of crazy streets all of which are one way only. Personally, I can't wait til we leave this town. We got to the hotel easily enough once we were able to get past the rush hour traffic. Not as bad as Chicago though. Anyway, hung out at the water park after having supper in the restaurant. Mom and Dad even had fun at the water park. Found out my knee is not in the best shape when it comes to swimming, seems that it does not like doing flutter kicks well, let along the steps to the slide, but hey, did it any way.
It is stormy here right now, with nice little steady drizzle, started after we got unloaded. Thunder and lightening occasionally. Tomorrow's destination will be a short drive as we are killing time, due to the fact our end destination was significantly moved closer from Denali to Skagway. So we are planning some geocaching between here and Grand Prairie, AB and then Sunday we start on to the Alaska Highway in Dawson Creek, BC. Been a good day, I did a fair amount of sleeping, and other than a few of us with crashing blood sugars as supper time passed and it was 9pm EST before we got supper, we are all doing well. Things are continueing to prove problems as we just got an email that one of the tours we booked on the White Pass and Yukon railway to the Chillikoot got canceled so now we are just going to do the Summit excursion now. Mom's comment is it just keeps coming. Ever wonder if we were supposed to do this trip?
