From there we followed the road north towards Darwin. We wanted to make a stop at Elsey National Park, but when we got there it was already getting dark. We decided to camp somewhere close and visit the national park next morning. Next day we went to the park and made some breakfast. Then we walked around in the park and we even saw a snake After the walk we swam in the famous Mataranka thermal pool. This is a crystal clear pool surrounded by rainforest. The warm, clear water comes from 100 meters under ground, and is filtered by the soil. Swimming there was a really nice and refreshing experience.
Since Kaupo had a birthday this day we decided to go straight to Darwin and find a nice cabin for the night
Next day we went to Lichfield National Park. This is a really nice and popular park for bushwalking, camping and especially swimming, with waterfalls plunging into gorgeous, safe swimming holes. Lichfield is a 1500- sq- km park, and we had to drive between the different “sights”. First we drove to the remarkable magnetic termite mounds. They look like huge tombstones and are perfectly aligned north to south, designed to regulate the temperature so the termites’ thin skin can cope with the extreme seasonal changes. Next stop was Buley Rockhole, where water cascades through a series of rock pools. The water was so clear and we jumped in for a cool and relaxing swim. Near Buley was Florence Falls, which is accessed by a 15- minute walking trail leading to a deep, beautiful pool with 2 waterfalls, surrounded by monsoon forest
