It is now only 1 sleep until D-Day and everything is happening. We have been counting down from 42 days and now there is only 1 finger left to go.... At a time when there seems an endless list of packing, cleaning and organising, and tempers are frayed, comes the age-old question: Why do we bother to leave the comforts of home? The answer is simple. We have been bitten by that well known parasite globius roamus, aka the travel bug (which at least makes a change from the leeches by our creek).
Although there have been prior infestations of globius roamus it was The Librarian and his family who triggered this bout of the dreaded disease. In what could be a Pratchett or Potter plot, the Librarian found a secret passage in the back of the State Library of NSW that took him directly to the Cloverdale Public Library in Surry, British Columbia. You can read more about The Librarian and his family on their blog In order to remain incognito, the Librarian used magic to transport a Cloverdale librarian back to Sydney where she has assumed his role in the genealogy archives when not writing about arachnophobia or learning to surf. Have a chuckle at It is our mission to travel from sunny LA to chilly New Westminster via wastelands, deserts and volcanoes to discover the secrets of the frozen wastelands of the north a la Tolkien.
Reactions from family, friends, classmates neighbours and work colleagues have been predictably a combination of jealousy and good wishes. Well, we are very grateful to you all for controlling the green-eyed monster and wishing us a happy and successful adventure. Stay tuned to this blog and we hope to turn your modest level of envy into full-blown covetous jealousy as you peruse the perambulations of the katta7 tribe.
Our feral girls have been keeping a steady pace in the packing process, interspersed with much noise and a healthy noise level (shock horror, we have a pair of identical t-shirts) and that evil-doer, Mr Nobody has been blamed for the mysterious disappearance of many prized possessions (just how did Hannah's school shoes get to her classroom yesterday??)
If you looked overhead in the afternoon of 8th April 2009 Sydneysiders may have noticed a large aircraft passing overhead. That was QF1 heading north to London. Hopefully we were not on it, but rather heading east over the ocean on a giant new Qantas A380 Airbus. Check out the Airbus at You will notice the spacious and luxurious accommodation in first class, the beds in business class and the comfort in premium economy class. If you hunt around the site you will find a small section devoted to cattle class or battery class, aka budget economy. And there, like true Aussies, will you find the katta7 tribe, harassing the hosties and annoying their fellow passengers with an excited childlike racket (that's the parents -the kids will be quietly playing computer games and watching movies on the their personal entertainment console). One child heard at school that if you are asleep on a plane you miss you meal when they bring around the food. She intends to stay awake the full 13.5 hours to LA to make sure she doesn't miss a thing!
Interestingly, Qantas incorporated some second-hand parts in the construction of the A380, taken from an old 60's police box that had mysteriously materialised in the Airbus factory one day. This means that QF11 is scheduled to take off at 1.05 pm today in Sydney and land in LA at 9.45 am today. It may also account for the wild-eyed man in the Airbus factory being chased by an assortment of strange aliens.
In LA, we will be staying at Bob's place in Monrovia, named after President Monroe (I'm Bob, and this here's my place... but watch out when the Good Old Boys turn up in their RV).
Speaking of RVs we will be picking up our 29' RV in LA before heading east across the Mohave Desert. Having never driven an RV before we turned to Homer Simpson (he bought an RV from Bob but carelessly drove it over a cliff) and then found guidance from the Robyn Williams' School of Advanced Driving in the 2007 film "Runaway RV". See So spare us a prayer for safety as we get behind the wheel and try to navigate out of LA on the wrong (or is right?) side of the road in a few days.
That's all from us for the moment folks. Enjoy the links and stay tuned for the next episode.
