Language, Culture, Laziness?
Entry 3 of 7 | show all | print this entry |
Still in Braga, we had one heck of a breakfast in the morning. Breakfast culture is big here and customers like to stay and chat a bit longer than is customary in Central Europe, where time, appointments, and punctuality are slightly more relevant. Here, all the way west, most people are laid-back and friendly and seem to enjoy life in an open and affectionate display of non-rush. What some call unwillingness to work, others, such as the Portuguese, consider an inherent part of their culture. Once again, first impressions...
Uli's language skills got us juice, coffee and pastries I still dream about and she also fended off a lady who was apparently asking for something, probably money. I quite admired Uli's Portuguese until she admitted that she could order food and for all other occasions and situations, the sentence "I don't speak Portuguese", in Portuguese, worked miracles. (All of that is true.)
We then rented a car (in English), and the four of us, two from Spain, two from Austria, fled the wet and gloomy city of Braga. We drove right into sunny Coimbra with its ancient city center and nice stores and restaurants.
