On to Charlotte
Entry 3 of 6 | show all | print this entry |
My Dad's good friend Curt helps me out because I'm all so unhappy on my own in Washington and I'm drowning in self-pity as well. I'm not too crazy about my accommodation here at the India House, either, even though it looks nice online, up on a little hill and full of color and good vibes. But then Curt sets me up with his daughter Kristen and her family who live in beautiful Charlotte, North Carolina. I hop on a plane and next thing I know, I'm there.
Hannah and Katherine have made a Welcome-sign for me and everything in Charlotte works out great. Hannah plays soccer and Katherine swims like a fish and they're both adorable. I even get to drive Sam's car, my first-time driving in the States (a stick-shift!!).
We also go to the beach for Kristen Palooza, Kristen's week-long birthday celebration on Ocean Isle. It's all a big secret devised by Sam and it's amazing. Nothing but great food, sun, fresh shrimp, eating, sitting up on the deck, playing pool, watching powerful thunderstorms from the safety of the porch, swimming, sunbathing, eating, crabbing, boogie boarding, watching dolphins, eating... I must have gained some weight then, too, even though Kristen says I didn't. I ate for three people then and it shows in the pictures!! (Needless to say, I'm not adding pics of myself in this travelogue).
My stay in Charlotte included lots of trips to the pool, to the movies, to Blockbuster, and certainly to the Mall. And lobster! Charlotte is where I was introduced to Abercrombie & Fitch, which we don't have in German-speaking Europe, and it turned into a life-long romance right then. I also had the pleasure to meet my good friends American Eagle, Victoria's Secret, Banana Republic and The Limited, all of which I explored like a little kid in a candy store. And then there was Target, or La Boutique Target, that I'd equally never seen before (I must have missed a few things on my 2-month trip in 97). And that superstore was actually good enough to win me 100 bucks for an article I wrote on it and sent in to our daily newspaper back home.
After a month, it's time to fly back to D.C. where I don't get to stay very long, though... for a very good reason. BECAUSE...
