Second time around
Entry 5 of 16 | show all | print this entry |
Some time around the 8th or 9th, the semester commenced. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to take a Creative Writing class because that's another thing we blatantly lack at home (for the most part, to be fair): creativity among academia. And of course I would be back at the FLIC.
It all began just as disorganized as you would expect and with so much LUCK it's almost unbearable. When I flew into Myrtle Beach (no detour via Washington this time), my friend who was supposed to pick me up was nowhere to be seen. My flight was early and she really can't be blamed. So I waited around for a while and in the end hitched a ride with two of the internationals I knew from the previous semester. They even put me up for the weekend on their couch because I had no place to stay: the girl I was supposed to room with, a friend from work, had given my room to someone else over the Christmas break. I did find that out while still in Europe, two days before my flight, but there was nothing much I could do about it from there and I figured SOMEONE would help me out. And Vladimir did. That was so nice. First giving me a ride and then having me stay with them for the weekend until Kamla, another chick from the FLIC and a very cool one at that, called and said that she had a room for me. SAVED.
Kamla's condo is actually a lot cleaner and nicer than the other place I would have moved into. We have no roaches, they're coming in to spray every month, washer and dryer are half a minute down the parking lot, all functional and cheap, and it couldn't be much better. I have my own space, not too big a room but certainly sufficient for the rent we pay, and Kamla has a telly (TV; I just like the British word telly so much) and a fax/phone combination. There is not much we will have to buy. At any rate, check this out: Erin, the one who had freely reassigned rooms in my absence, was left out in the rain by that other girl who was going to get my room. :o)
