Arrive in Samoa
Entry 1 of 1 | show all | print this entry |
After a long couple of flights (managing to sleep a bit on the second), we finally touched down in Samoa. Outside I could see palm trees and ocean. As soon as we were off the plane I could feel the warmth and humidity. Chris spotted his parents straight away at a window of the airport. After reclaiming bags, boat and paddles, (and convincing the security to let me keep the christmas pudding that I'd forgotton to claim), we were welcomed by Elaine and Nick with some customary necklaces made from sweets and flowers. On the drive from the airport to their house in Apia I caught my first sights of the island. We drove along the coast, through the villages and saw lots of fales (the traditional houses, thatched huts that are open to catch the sea breeze). There are lots of churches. Each village also seemed to have it's own rugby pitch and volleyball net and cricket strip. Despite being about 6.30 quite a few people were up and about. There were quite a few dogs around and some pigs in the sea.
