Middle East Stopover

My 3 hour stopover in Bahrain on the way to Bangkok was much more unremarkable than I thought it would be.

For those of you who (like me) had no idea where Bahrain was on the map, it's an archipelago on the "Arabian Gulf" and the capitol city is connected to Saudi Arabia by a long bridge. Evidently Bahrain is a huge tourist destination, especially within the Middle East, because they are far less conservative than most of their neighbors.

The airport is quite modern and nice. The only real difference between it and, say, Memphis is the uniformed military doing the screening. Also, I don't know if this is a Heathrow thing or a Gulf Air/flying into Bahrain thing, but every passenger was sniffed by bomb-sniffing dogs before they boarded this flight.

The thing I did notice about the women wearing long robes in the less conservative style is that most seemed to be carrying designer handbags and wearing expensive shoes. In any case, the airline I was on (Gulf Air) was fantastic. They had everything available to you even in economy, good food, nice stewardesses (yes, all of them were women) and they even had a "Sky Nanny" for those traveling with small children.

Hiya, I'm just wondering if you can help me...I'm flying to Bangkok in June and im also flying with Gulf Air and have a stopover in Bahrain (I think for about 4-6hours). I'm flying by myself so I'm quite nervous...just wondering what there is to do in the airport etc? Thanks!
