We reached the border of Colorado about 8 p.m. Friday, August 20th (last night). The sun was going down as we drove through fields and open prairies. Horses ran through these wide open ranches as though they were completely in the wild.
As day light left and night settled a pack of horses ran side by side with our car, w/ the dimming sun as their background. It was so cool!
We finally got off the highway around 10 p.m. in the heart of the Rockies! I-40 at midnight, after 30 hours of non-stop driving was arguably the scariest moment of my life. (even scarier than the thought of Chris with no shirt on)!
We reached the campground at midnight! BREATH TAKING! Our site is right on Lake Granby. The mountains stretch out over the lake and the moon was so bright it illuminated the night.. It was amazing! It was also freezing. The radio said it was in the high 40's. We hurried to set up our tent as we got slammed with freezing gusts of winds! Don't worry we were nice and warm inside. (It sure is a small tent).
The next morning, we were all bundled up from the cold night, but by the time Kevin made breakfast (eggs, cereal, salami and toast :o) it was almost 90 degrees. We made friends with the people in the tent next door to us. They gave us some cool ideas for things to do in Colorado.
We were anxious to start the day, so we decided to go hiking through Rocky Mountain National Park to the Colorado River. It was 6 miles in all and the altitude made it completely exhausting. We were 2 miles above sea level, 11,000 feet. Crazy. We drove up to the top of the mountains and it was freezing. The view of the mountains were breathtaking and we were in awe. We were above the clouds.
We spent the rest of the day driving through little towns, canyons, and ranches
We are going horseback riding through the rocky mountains tomorrow and will leave for Wyoming tomorrow afternoon.
p.s. The people in Colorado are extremely nice and friendly.
Keep you posted. We love you. Love, Katie and Kevin
