Where I stayed
The trip took us up, via a wildlife sanctuary and over the Daintree River to Cape Tribulation (named by Captain Cook when the Endeavour ran into problems after striking the reef.) We stayed in the Cape Trib Beach House right on the beach and surrounded by rainforest. We arrived at lunch time so we had time to walk along the beach, to the lookout point, and through some more rainforest to Myall beach below.
The views are amazing, the water is so clear, and the weather was great. It's dry season here which was lucky. In wet season it rains all day, every day so the trip wouldn't have been mcuh fun!
The following day I tried my hand at sea kayaking
We stopped on the beach and Brandon cut open some coconuts a put straws in so we could taste. He also told us a lot of the history/geology of the area which was really interesting. We then hopped back in the kayaks and paddled around some reef. There is loads that sticks out of the water but it is dead, but as the swell of the sea changes you can see live coal attached to it - so cool!
It was then time to head to Port Douglas. On the way back we did a 'Croc Cruise' on the Daintree River. Unfortunately it was a quiet day and we saw a hatchling resting on a branch, and another croc on the bank but she was quite hidden. We did see some birds, including an Azure Kinfisher which is bright blue - v striking, and a couple of common tree snakes (luckily a long way off!). After the cruise we went to Mossman Gorge and walked around there - v peaceful.
20 mins later we were in Port Douglas. It's a very wealthy town with a lovely beach (Four Mile Beach). There is a Sheraton Hotel there that costs over 1000pounds a night!! Kylie & Nicole Kidman have stayed there this year, and apparently Bill Clinton was there on Sept 11th. In fact they had to clear the road from there to Cairns to get him to the airport and fly him out urgently..!
We stayed the night in Port Douglas (at a cheap hostel!!) and the following day hung out at the beach before doing the last leg of our trip back to Cairns. As we drove back the
sun set over the amazing scenery. It's a beautiful part of the country and a shame we didn't hang around longer really.
